Nik & Joy: June 2, 2006

Where it all began!

This week is a little slow on blog posts so I wanted to do something different... show you my very first EVER wedding that I did. Even though it was over 5 years ago and I've come so far since then, I have to say, it was a great first experience, and the photos aren't too bad either.

Nik contacted me during my junior year at Grand Valley. I still remember waking up that morning and reading his email. He asked if I had ever shot a wedding. "No," I said, "But I'm hoping to someday!" He asked me if I would be interested in doing his in early June. Nik is my cousin's cousin, so we are not actually related. But I've known his family since I was in little pink ballet slippers and tutus (his sister assisted at the dance studio I was a part of as a little lady). It was the start I needed when I had no idea where to get started! I ran out that weekend and bought my first digital SLR, my old D50, my speedlight, and a couple other things I thought I'd need for wedding photography.

Nik's fiance, Joy, was the BEST bride I could have had to start out with. She made a photo layout of the day for me that told me EXACTLY what she wanted, which was the basis for my own photo itineraries that I still create for my brides today (although with a few less details now that I know a thing or two!). And I must say, it was a great experience, and I even got some good photos to show for it! Without further ado, check out Jenna Rose Photography's first EVER wedding.

Now remember, FIRST wedding, so these aren't up to my normal standard. My style was very straightforward at first, I had to find out what my style even was! And I did tweak a couple of them just a little... hey, I'm more of a perfectionist now!

^I STILL love this image of Joy's sister tying her dress. I got a little crazy with the noise filter, but hopefully you can forgive me!

^The boys looking great in their suits. Little Liam is such a big boy now, although I haven't seen him in forever!

^This is a pretty good portrait for someone who doesn't have a lot of posing experience yet :-)

^Today, I could get this shot without having to photoshop tweak it, but I still like it, either way!

^This was a FUN reception, great time watching the whole crowd get down, including our groom, Nik, who is sporting some national pride!

A BIG thanks to Joy and Nik for taking a chance on me all those years ago and helping me get to where I am today! Oh, and for the lens. It may not be top end glass, but I still get some decent shots out of that ol' thing!

This is the second time I have had the pleasure to work with Ms. Latesha, and a much hotter time it was. We worked on some off-camera flash techniques, had a good time, and got some great photos in the process. Thanks again, Latesha, for working with me and I hope to do so again shortly!

Art & Amy: A St. Joe Wedding

This summer, I have had the pleasure to work with many fine photographers as a second shooter at weddings they were working at. I've added another to the list. Last Thursday, I went down to St. Joe's, a place I've done a few engagement sessions at in the past, with Jen of Jen Lettinga Photography. It was great to get to chat with her, discuss various weddings and work we've done, and figure out all the details of the day.

Art and Amy were very detail oriented for their wedding, and there were tons of fun little things in addition to the couple that we got to photograph. Their ceremony was very specific to the blending of their two lives together, and there were just so many shots I got from the ceremony that I just loved! The wedding day was a little warm but otherwise beautiful, and although the schedule definitely did not work out as originally planned, we got a lot of great shots (especially since the light was being so cooperative!) and generally had a good day, despite not making it home until 1am!

We also worked alongside of Joe, a videographer from KZoom Weddings, and he helped us out a lot during the day, had dinner with us (exiled from the reception ;) and generally was fun to talk to. I hope to get to work with both Jen and Joe again in the future!

^Both Art and Amy carried a guitar pick (Art plays) to remind each other of their vows.

^This little dog was around while we did portraits, he is ready for summer, I think!

^I love it when the guys get to wear a color other than black. Lookin' good, Art!

^This was a great idea, their sand ceremony featured sand from St. Joe's (where Amy spent time as a child) and from back where Art is from, as well as shells from both locations, and they put them all together as a big family to symbolize the joining of the two familes.

^Buddy, their dog, was present to assist in the big day.

^An "almost" outdoor reception, and it was a perfect day for it, too!

^I rarely stay till the end of a reception, but as Jen was requested to do, we shot the send-off, sparkler style.

^Of COURSE, my flash batteries were dying at the very last minute, but with a little luck, the girl standing next to me was taking photos as well and I caught her flash JUST as Amy tossed her bouquet. Awesome!
