Northern Ireland: Giant's Causeway (part 3)

May 3, 2023

As our elopement retreat went on, we went to a fairly well-known location along the coast, Giant's Causeway, another part of Northern Ireland's National Trust. There were definitely a lot more tourists exploring this spot than as any of our other locations, which made keeping our images looking remote a bit more tricky, but photographers are nothing if not clever at spotting the correct angles!

Located along the northern coast, Giant's Causeway consists of coastal basalt columns, which are naturally occurring geometric rock formations only found in locations with higher levels of volcanic activity. These hexagonal-shaped stacks of rock are formed after fast-flowing basalt lava flows cool and are cracked into columnar joints. You can find more of these basalt formations in Iceland as well as California and Oregon.

The name Giant's Causeway comes from a legend of the destruction of a strip of land that reached from Northern Ireland across the water to Scotland. Giants who had been conquered along the path between destroyed the land strip as he fled, leaving similar land formations on both islands, even though they were no longer connected.

Our session featured real-life couple, Phil and Brian, who looked adorably dapper in their colorful suitcoats. They were also rather brave, climbing to some higher spots along the coastline and even helping spot some cool angles as we scaled the basalt columns. Despite the bright sun (not too common for Ireland in the spring!), we got a ton of great images of these two along a breathtaking natural backdrop that you just don't see every day.

And this was still only our first day of elopement shoots!
